You might probably have heard of some product or service as sustainable, or there are very firms that highly focuses on sustainability. However, you might wonder what sustainability is. It means to preserve and maintain resources. It is often associated with things like recycling, using renewable energy sources, preserving rainforests, etc. People often ask what a simple definition of sustainability is. Simply put, sustainability is the ability to endure or continue. If a product or activity is sustainable, it can be reused, recycled, or repeated in some way because it has not exhausted all of the resources or energy required to use or create it. Hence, it can be broadly defined as the ability of something to maintain itself.

When we talk about sustainability, we also talk about the principles of sustainable development. Generally, there are ten principles of sustainable development. There are many different products on the world market, but only few are said to be truly sustainable. Sustainability is all about people, planet, and profits. These are also said to be the three pillars of sustainability.

  • People – it refers to the society. It means we have got to have good communities, and we need to have good conditions for the workforce.
  • Planet – it refers to the environment, which means to have high extents of environmental sustainability.
  • Profit – it refers to the economy. It means that none of it is any good if we go out of business. Profit is one of the main priority. If a product is profitable, only then it can be made sustainable.

  • Safe

A product should be safe in order to be sustainable, which means it should be nontoxic. The product should be always be environmental friendly as well as safe for the consumers to utilize.

  • Efficient

A product should be efficient, using the least amount of materials as well as energy. It should always use lesser resources in the manufacturing process and should be easy to recycle.

  • Social

A product should be social, which means it should have a good connection with people, consumers, or even workers.

Environmental sustainability is all about preserving the nature, making safer products that serves the societies. Sustainability theory is based on the idea that the social responses towards the environmental, societal, and cultural issues should be prioritized. There’s also a sustainability model which focus on three main factors. These factors are social, environment, and finance.

In order to build higher levels of sustainability, one needs to overlook these three factors from the sustainability model. No product can be called sustainable if it does not depend on these three factors.
