Superintendent, Apostle Islands National Lakeshore

PLENARY SESSION 3: Freshwater Challenges: Global and Local
March 26, 2014, 11:00 a.m.

Bob Krumenaker has served as the National Park Service Superintendent of Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, on Lake Superior, since 2002. Krumenaker has been intensively involved in climate change issues since late 2006, when he participated in the GAO workshop on the impact of climate change on federal lands and subsequently recommended that the Midwest Region and Great Lakes national parks, in particular, make climate change and sustainability a priority. He was a charter member of the NPS Climate Change Steering Committee and received the region’s Superintendent of the Year award in 2008 for his climate change work. Krumenaker and his staff have put climate change and sustainable park operations front and center at the Apostle Islands, becoming the region’s first “climate friendly park” in 2007, installing several climate change wayside exhibits in the park and in the gateway community, and leading by example in many sustainability programs. Krumenaker also served as the lead author on the NPS Midwest Region Climate Change Response and Green Parks Strategy, which was adopted in 2012.
